As I was preparing for what may be one of my last presentations in Eugene late last week I got my “daily” blog post from Seth Godin. He talked about the concept of “completing the circle”. He describes the circle is that continuum of relationships with stranger and one end and brand champion at the other. Since I was talking about the concept of employment branding and employee engagement the metaphor really resonated with me.
At its most effective isn’t that what we accomplish in great employment strategy and even in the relationship between “vendor” and customer and employer and employee? It may sound kind of grandiose, but that is how I like to think of the relationships I have with the people who “represent” my brand as a consultant and the people who give me the privilege of serving their organization. A wise mentor once said to me “when my clients refer to me as a vendor, I know I have failed to create the kind of relationship that I seek”.
I think that makes a powerful statement in the context of Godin’s comments. A “brand champion” doesn’t need to be a current client or customer or even a current employee to advocate and represent you and your brand. In fact when I talk with people about the fifth and final stage of my Compliance to Commitment model, loyalty, I recommend they define it in terms of advocacy and discretionary effort rather than tenure. Tenure may be a matter of convenience, security or any number of other things.
I shared my belief that the things that most of what employers desire from employees; innovation, effort, creativity, honesty, excellence, energy, etc are in fact gifts from the employee, or if not gifts things that can’t be demanded or expected from a subservient relationship, but rather must come from equal partners.
We talked about another phrase I have come to loathe as well- human capital. The problem with that phrase is to me is de-humanizes people and describes them in terms of a disposable or diminishing resource or asset. The best alternative I have arrived at to date is partner. Not partner in the idea that we must all share equity, but partner in the idea that we work best where we share mutual respect, clarity of purpose, and commitment to an idea bigger than us individually. There are a number of elements in cultivating and sustaining relationships that do that and it is what I have decided to do with what remains of my career.
Conferences and workshops are kind of fun. They give us an opportunity to begin completing the circle. We have that opportunity with the people we network with, the presenters, and others we encounter. I like to think the primary role of the presenter is to provide some concepts for the audience’s consideration. If we kindle a spark then they think about it some more and maybe even share it with others. The important thing to me isn’t who gets credited with the idea, but rather do we give people a different metaphor or paradigms to examine.
Shortly I will be leaving Eugene and leaving a lot of circles. I hope that I completed a few of these while we had a chance to know each other. My goal wasn’t to make you a brand champion for me or my ideas, but rather to help you build and complete that circle with your colleagues and employees. I have come to believe that by creating that sense of engagement or shared purpose resulting in voluntary, additional discretionary effort we can harness a very powerful force that will benefit us personally and professionally.
So I guess a thought that I find crossing my mind more frequently these days is that when I interact with people either professionally or personally am I seeing them as a transaction, or I am giving both of us a chance to complete the circle. Gives me something to think about. How about you……?
